The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) published in May 2016 is intended to establish a uniform level of protection for the personal data of its citizens throughout the EU. The GDPR will be directly applicable as of 25 May 2018.

The coordinating body of the digital advertising industry for interest-based online advertising, European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA), is responsible for the Europe-wide implementation of the guidelines of the self-regulatory initiative for Online Behavioural Advertising (OBA). This cross-industry self-regulatory initiative was launched by leading European bodies to guarantee transparency as well as security in the handling of interest-based data.
